Lindau sets standards: Bavaria’s largest PFAS-free membrane plant successfully in operation

15.01.2026

Gotha, 15.01.2026 – A milestone for sustainable water management in Bavaria was reached with the commissioning of the expanded Lindau wastewater treatment plant in December 2025: The city of Lindau has expanded its plant to become the largest membrane treatment stage in Bavaria – and deliberately opted for the PFAS-free MYTEX membrane technology from WTA UNISOL GmbH.

The focus of the project was not only the renewal of an ageing infrastructure, but above all the introduction of a high-performance, environmentally friendly solution for the elimination of micropollutants – in the immediate vicinity of Lake Constance, one of the most important drinking water reservoirs in Europe. The new fourth treatment stage meets the highest water protection requirements and achieves effluent loads of bathing water quality.

“The decision to use our PFAS-free MYTEX modules was a clear signal of environmental responsibility and future-proof technology,” explains Carsten Bachert, Managing Director of WTA UNISOL. “By using polyethersulfone (PES) as a membrane material, we offer a high-performance alternative to fluorine-containing PVDF – without any environmental or health risks.”

MYTEX membranes are completely free of perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), which are increasingly becoming the focus of regulatory measures as so-called “eternity chemicals”. PES, on the other hand, is considered highly chemically and thermally resistant and is already being used successfully in sensitive areas such as medical technology and baby care.

About the project in Lindau:
The Lindau wastewater treatment plant treats the wastewater from the city and six other municipalities in the Lake Constance catchment area. With the expansion to 72,000 population equivalents, the integration of MYTEX membrane technology and the introduction of a fourth treatment stage, a new chapter has been opened in municipal water protection – under sometimes difficult conditions such as the pandemic, a shortage of skilled workers and inflation. Lindau is thus setting a new standard for sustainable, future-oriented wastewater treatment throughout Bavaria.

About WTA UNISOL GmbH:
WTA UNISOL GmbH specializes in innovative membrane solutions for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. With its PFAS-free MYTEX technology, the company is setting new standards in terms of sustainability, performance and environmental compatibility – for the water treatment of tomorrow.

Bonus information:

Why PFAS-free membranes are the future of water treatment

The water treatment industry is facing a radical change: the planned EU-wide ban on PFAS makes it clear that fluorine-based materials such as PVDF in membranes are no longer an option in the long term. These substances are considered harmful to the environment and potentially harmful to health – not least because they are extremely persistent and can accumulate in the environment and organisms. PFAS (perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds) are referred to as “perpetual chemicals” due to their longevity. They enter the soil, water, air – and ultimately the food chain – via industrial processes, waste or consumer products. This is exactly where the MYTEX membrane modules from WTA UNISOL come in: It is completely PFAS-free and offers a high-performance, sustainable alternative for modern water treatment systems. By consciously avoiding harmful fluorine compounds, we are making an active contribution to protecting our water resources – today and for future generations.
