MYTEX Retrofit: A Planned, Fast, Cost-Efficient Membrane Upgrade for Municipal MBR Plants

Upgrade performance – without rebuilding your plant

Municipal wastewater treatment operators across Europe and beyond are under pressure: stricter effluent targets, rising energy and maintenance costs, and aging membrane installations that weren’t designed for today’s requirements. When plate-and-frame modules reach end-of-life, the usual options are frustratingly expensive and disruptive from replacing countless individual components to purchasing entirely new filtration plants.

MYTEX Retrofit was developed for a different path: a planned, drop-in modernization that keeps your plant running, stays within budget, and delivers measurable capacity and performance gains.

The problem with replacements

When membrane modules age, operators typically face two unappealing choices:

  1. Expensive replacement parts (e.g. individual components) that drive up cost and downtime
  2. Full module replacement, often requiring higher investment, risking operational interruptions and may upgrade of auxiliary equipment

In the Bodrum municipal wastewater treatment plant (Turkey), exactly this dilemma occurred: renewing outdated membranes.

The MYTEX approach: Retrofit as a controlled, scalable upgrade

MYTEX Retrofit is a drop-in solution for all plate-and-frame modules, designed to modernize in a step-by-step, predictable way – with minimal time and cost investment.

Importantly, it can be implemented without additional retrofitting or changes to the auxiliary equipment and further to the control system, keeping existing peripherals and control systems unchanged.

What this means for municipalities:

  • Plannable modernization instead of a complete rebuild
  • Short shutdown windows (designed for fast execution)
  • Cost control through targeted replacement strategy
  • Operational stability by keeping controls/peripherals intact

Our MYTEX membrane modules

MYTEX LAMINAT is a textile material that impresses with its high strength, robustness and durability. It is completely pressure-resistant to high negative pressures and therefore cannot be damaged even at the maximum possible suction pressure.

The MYTEX LAMINAT has a patented design and can be manufactured with any commercially available flatsheet membranes, which supports flexibility for application-oriented membrane selection. Thanks to its hybrid properties, the laminate is flexible and backwashable, with a high degree of free volume within the drainage layer. This free volume can be used to introduce reactive substances, enabling further treatment processes and integrating downstream processes into one step.

SAFEGUARD TECHNOLOGY ensures the retention of biomass, even in the event of severe membrane damage. The multi-layer laminate prevents the penetration of biomass. The retained biomass forms a secondary filtration layer that effectively blocks any point of damage and safely retains biomass. This prevents high turbidity or suspended solids in the permeate.

Replacement strategy that fits real-world budgets: focus on only the filtration part of the submerged membranes.

Instead of getting stuck in a costly cycle of expensive component replacements, MYTEX Retrofit supports replacement equipped through blocks/modules. Replacement outfitting using blocks or modules that can be precisely tailored to match the existing footprint, a practical approach for municipal plants planning staged CAPEX and scheduled maintenance windows.

This modular thinking helps utilities:

  • upgrade progressively,
  • reduce procurement complexity,
  • and avoid the hidden costs of piecemeal repairs.

Case Study: Bodrum, Turkey - results you can plan for

After implementing MYTEX Retrofit at the municipal WWTP in Bodrum, the project delivered clear outcomes:

  • Minimum retrofit time: completed in only 4 hours
  • Lower investment costs: a cost-effective alternative to expensive individual components
  • More capacity in the same footprint: +50% capacity, increasing from 320 to 480 m² while maintaining the same footprint
  • Robust module technology: described as highly robust for suction operation and featuring a self-healing membrane

In short: Bodrum demonstrates how retrofit can be a cost-efficient alternative to replacing outdated modules, reducing investment and time while improving plant performance.

Built for today’s requirements

MYTEX Retrofit is positioned as an upgrade platform, not a limitation. For municipalities and international operators, that flexibility matters – especially when procurement rules, long-term framework contracts, or technology preferences differ from region to region.

In focus for MYTEX Retrofit projects:

  • PFAS-free solution (as specified for MYTEX Retrofit projects)
  • Free membrane choice
  • Over 80,000 configuration options
  • Designed for municipal end customers looking for predictable modernization

Why municipalities choose Retrofit now

Because it fits the real constraints of public infrastructure:

  • Budget cycles demand phased investments
  • Downtime must be minimized
  • Performance must improve without increasing footprint
  • Upgrades should not trigger control-system overhauls

MYTEX Retrofit is built around those realities.

Next step: evaluate your retrofit potential

If your plant runs plate-and-frame membrane modules and you’re planning a modernization, MYTEX Retrofit can be assessed as a drop-in upgrade path – from a targeted replacement strategy to a staged upgrade plan.
