Like in shipbuilding: when the steel frame stays, MYTEX Retrofit pays off

Picture a ship under construction: massive steel frames, accurately measured, built to last for decades. No one would think of replacing the entire structure just because individual components need to be modernized. In shipbuilding, you retrofit – customized, efficient, and planned.

MYTEX Retrofit applies exactly this principle to municipal wastewater treatment plants with plate-and-frame systems: the existing frame remains, and modernization happens through custom-fit retrofit blocks/modules that can be matched precisely to the existing footprint.

Pressure on operators is rising - and old modules become the bottleneck

Municipal operators in Europe and internationally face the same challenges: higher inflow volumes, stricter discharge limits, rising operating costs. When membrane modules age, the decision is often unattractive: expensive spare parts or complete new modules – both cost time and money and can disrupt operations.

MYTEX Retrofit offers a third option: a planned upgrade that uses existing structures -rather than replacing them.

MYTEX custom blocks for existing frames

At the core of the concept: MYTEX custom blocks (retrofit blocks/modules) are designed for existing frames. This keeps the original module construction in place and focuses modernization on what really matters: filtration technology upgrade and performance.

Your operational benefits:

  • Replacement outfitting blocks or modules, custom-fit to the existing footprint
  • Suitable for any plate-and-frame system (retrofit approach for existing frame constructions)
  • Original construction remains intact: less intervention, lower project risk
  • A predictable upgrade path instead of a full rebuild

Drop-in upgrade without control-system stress

A decisive point for many plants: MYTEX Retrofit is designed as a drop-in solution for plate-and-frame modules and enables a step-by-step upgrade with minimal time and cost effort.

Importantly, the retrofit is engineered to fit into existing frames and avoid structural modifications – an approach that enables upgrades especially when changes to tanks, peripherals, or control systems are undesired.

Our MYTEX membrane modules

MYTEX LAMINAT is a textile material that impresses with its high strength, robustness and durability. It is completely pressure-resistant to high negative pressures and therefore cannot be damaged even at the maximum possible suction pressure.

The MYTEX LAMINAT has a patented design and can be manufactured with any commercially available flatsheet membranes, which supports flexibility for application-oriented membrane selection. Thanks to its hybrid properties, the laminate is flexible and backwashable, with a high degree of free volume within the drainage layer. This free volume can be used to introduce reactive substances, enabling further treatment processes and integrating downstream processes into one step.

SAFEGUARD TECHNOLOGY ensures the retention of biomass, even in the event of severe membrane damage. The multi-layer laminate prevents the penetration of biomass. The retained biomass forms a secondary filtration layer that effectively blocks any point of damage and safely retains biomass. This prevents high turbidity or suspended solids in the permeate.

Case study: cruise ships - retrofitting existing frames to meet stricter IMO requirements

The maritime industry has been under additional pressure since regulations became stricter: since June 1, 2021, the IMO Resolution MEPC.227(64) has introduced tighter effluent standards for onboard wastewater treatment- especially in “Special Areas” such as the Baltic Sea. For operators, this means existing systems risk non-compliance if they do not meet the new criteria.

Starting point:

Five cruise ships needed to upgrade their MBR systems because the previous modules did not meet expectations in terms of quality and durability. At the same time, the new solution had to fit seamlessly into the existing module frames to avoid costly modifications.

The MYTEX Retrofit solution:

  • Custom-fit installation: Membrane blocks were designed to fit directly into the existing frames (a precise “drop-in” approach).
  • Easy handling: Modular blocks are designed so they can be handled by two people – without tank modifications.
  • Durability: Expected operation of five years, with no tank access required for maintenance.

Implementation & scope:

The MYTEX Retrofit projects were implemented across five ships in 2022 and 2023; 4,950 m² of MYTEX membrane area were installed per ship.

Results (excerpt):

  • Compliance: Designed to meet IMO MARPOL MEPC.227(64) standards.
  • Improved performance & operations: better effluent quality, simplified maintenance, fewer operational interruptions.
  • Cost savings: using existing frames reduced structural modifications.

Retrofit that doesn’t limit you, it opens options

Especially for international and European operators, flexibility and future-proofing matter. That’s why MYTEX Retrofit focuses on:

  • PFAS-free solution
  • free membrane choice
  • over 80,000 configurations
  • a retrofit strategy that can be integrated into maintenance windows and budget cycles

Your next step

👉 Do you operate a municipal wastewater treatment plant and want to increase capacity without touching the footprint and control system?

Then it’s worth taking a look at MYTEX Retrofit – based on the principle of “keep the frame, upgrade the membranes”.
