Practical membrane technologies for challenging industrial wastewater

01.08.2026

As part of the “MemTecPlus” initiative, WTA UNISOL collaborated with leading research partners to develop a microfiltration module for the treatment of mine water. The goal was to develop a continuous-flow membrane filtration system capable of removing particle-bound pollutants, heavy metals—particularly arsenic as a specific concern—and recoverable materials from contaminated water.

Our subproject focused on developing a demonstration module, implementing a practical pilot plant, and testing various membrane materials under real-world conditions. The PVC and PES membranes developed achieved promising results when operated with contaminated sludge from the “Roter Graben.”

The project demonstrated the potential of innovative membrane systems for treating industrial and mining process water, while also opening up new areas of application for our technologies.
